Fortnite Battle Royale UPDATE: New PS4 Smoke Grenades and Xbox One X patch release

FORTNITE BATTLE Royale is getting a big update this week, which will be launched on PS4, PC, Xbox One and the Xbox One X.

UPDATE ONE: Epic Games have confirmed that Fortnite Battle Royale servers will be going offline today to make way for the new update.

The development team say that servers will be going offline at around 9am GMT, to make for the new content on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

"There will be downtime. Battle Royale matchmaking will be disabled 15 minutes before downtime begins as we prepare for the patch deployment," the message from Epic Games explains.

"Players will be logged out of all Epic services prior to the deployment will be able to to log back into the Launcher, Website, and Forums after a few minutes. The V.1.9.1 client update will be for all players on all platforms."

ORIGINAL: Epic Games have announced that Fortnite Battle Royale will be the latest game to launch Xbox One X support.

Soon to be followed by the likes of Fallout 4 and Skyrim, Fortnite’s latest patch will include upgrades for Microsoft's new console.

This new Fortnite Battle Royale update is being released onto game servers Wednesday, November 29, and will also include new content for each platform.

Fans will soon have access to a new non-lethal weapon - the Smoke Grenade.

Like other grenades featured in-game, the Smoke variant is thrown like a frag but obscures vision with a white smoke, and can be found in all container types, as well as spawn randomly as floor loot.

Other big changes will be made to the Battle Royale leaderboards, which will now include two different score ranks

The Score leaderboard, meanwhile, will be measured by the amount of total experience gained.

Epic Games haven’t confirmed what time the new patch will be going live, although an update on that subject is expected later today.

Fortnite’s original mode - Save the World - is also getting some love, with two new weapons being added to the available list.

This includes:

Vindertech Weapons - Secure victory with Vindertech! Harness the power of nine, all new weapons available during this Mutant Storms season.

Mutant Storms Return - Mutant storms are back! Stormchasers can earn storm tickets as they fight back hordes of mutated husks. Squad up, survive, and loot!

YOOKA-LAYLEE GETS NINTENDO SWITCH RELEASE DATE

The game will initially be available only as a digital download, with a physical release still to be confirmed. Those who backed the game on Kickstarter and chose to receive a Wii U version, then chose to receive a Switch copy when the Wii U port was canceled, will receive a code on launch day.

Playtonic worked directly with Nintendo and Unity to optimise the new version of the game - it will run at 900p in docked mode, and 600p in handheld mode (you can see footage of the game in handheld mode below).

Playtonic claims the Switch version of Yooka-Laylee is the best yet, thanks to optimisations that have resulted in improvements such as a more consistent frame-rate.

The Switch version adds an internal achievements system (the achievements appear to be based entirely on those found on the Xbox and PlayStation versions), and supports single Joy-Con play in Yooka-Laylee’s multiplayer arcade games. It also comes pre-packaged with the major patch other versions received post-release, adding new camera controls, improved signposting and more.

This marks the release of the final version of Yooka-Laylee. Playtonic has not yet announced what it’s next project will be.

We awarded Yooka Laylee a 7.0 review, saying that “while it lacks the heart and polish of some of its incredible predecessors, it’s a good reminder that this genre, once thought to be dead, still has some life left in it.”
